Answers To The Century Old Question When Is Mother's Day And When Should I Send Her Gift

By: Charles de Chunac

Children ask the same question year after year, when is mother's day? This day reserved for mothers everywhere is recognized on the second Sunday each May. This is the day where children can express the love and affection they have for their mom. Mothers day has been a recognized holiday for centuries even before it was a day for department stores to push their selection of cards and cheap perfumes.

Many women have waited the entire year to spend the day in bed while a breakfast of half cooked chocolate chip pancakes are served to them. For many this was their best breakfast ever. Mothers actually look forward to the pancakes and phone calls. It is the one day every year where they know they have been recognized.

This Sunday in May is also the one day a year when children can be as messy as they want in the kitchen and not one of their moms will be concerned about the flour covered floor and sink full of dishes. These days fade over time and become replaced with a ten minute call out of guilt.

Moms come in a vast array of types but it all comes down to the woman who bandaged the scraped knees and chased the boogie man from under the bed. A mom is any woman who has been a part of your life in some way. It could be the foster mom who cried with you or the grandmother that remembered what your favorite color was and made you a scarf of that color every birthday. This is the time to celebrate and recognize all of the women in your life.

As adults we are consumed with work, school and families. It is easy to neglect the phone calls and the surprise visits to the women in our lives. Being both a mother and a daughter I can attest to busyness as well as the anticipation both in getting and giving the yearly phone call.

What was it that brought enough attention to mothers to warrant them their own day? When is mothers day? Anna Marie Jarvis made it vow to continue what her mother had started and that was to make a day for recognition of mothers as a recognized holiday. In 1914, the goal was met and mothers day became a recognized holiday, however, this was centuries after a similar day was honored.

This was centuries after the English began their custom of Mothering Sunday which was the day given for servants allowing them time away to travel home in order to give respect to mothers. The celebration of mothers has taken many changes throughout centuries. The day to celebrate has changed as well as the original purpose. The servants of 1600s were delighted to take the self baked cake to their mothers.

Long gone are the days of baking a cake and traveling miles to visit and replaced with store bought cakes or pondering for days as to the type of flower to send across the miles. Mothers love the mothers day gift ideas showered upon them and do not care what the gift is, it is honestly the idea that their child remembered that means so much.

There are probably very few mothers that would not be able to tell you what they received for their first mothers. In fact most would be happy to dig out the worn hand made card that you proudly traced your hand onto or the necklace made from macaroni that she continues to wear on special occasions. The point is when you ask yourself when is mother's day instead of surprising the woman of your past with flowers; surprise her with a handmade card and a macaroni necklace. The idea is to recognize your mother and to celebrate her sacrifices not to utilize the commercialization to find a boring mothers day gift baskets. This year give your mom a give from the heart as opposed to the same mothers day gifts her neighbor will receive.
