Preparing The Move To the Nursery Early

By: Voula Constandina

Whenever you bring your new baby home, you most likely will get the urge to have him or her close to you always, especially whenever you (attempt to!) go to rest for the night. It feels right to have a cot or cradle in the bedroom initially, as it will lessen the distance you have to walk to take care of night time feedings.

You are able to attempt relocating the baby into his / her nursery for naps right from the beginning, to attempt to reduce any stress or anxiety by moving him into a new room with new smells and sights when he is older. Sit with him or her in a rocker or glider and rock him to sleep at first, and then switch him into his cot.

Later on, you can put him in his cot and if he is fussy or cannot get to sleep, try sitting close to the cot for a few evenings till he falls asleep. And then move the chair further away for an additional week or so. Finally, place the chair near the door, so the baby gets accustomed to falling asleep with out being right next to you.

It'll be hard in the beginning, however , if you are constant, eventually, you'll get your baby to the stage where he can fall asleep in his own room.

By starting these simple routines early on, ideally you will prevent difficulty later on trying to move the baby into his nursery and getting him to rest at a normal time.
