Who Earns a Military Medal?

By: James Morgan

To millions of Americans who have served our country in combat or other forms, military medals mean so much more than a piece of shiny medal that is attached to a piece of ribbon.

Civilians might not be able to fully understand what military medals and military ribbons represent. They symbolize something greater than the norm. They represent chivalry, honor and heroism.

These symbols of honor are designed to be worn on the military uniform, and under no circumstances are they to be worn with another outfit. They are sometimes referred to as a military decoration.

Since the invention of the battle, armies had certain ways to recognize soldiers who went above and beyond the call of duty. Whether it was special clothing, bejeweled necklaces or tattoos, soldiers were recognized in the event that they exhibit certain forms of bravery, dedication and chivalry.

Not just anybody in any situation merits an honor like this. Military personnel go through lengthy proceedings to see who will be deemed worthy of a medal. When all is said and done, they are looking for a genuine hero.

The term 'her' or 'heroine' originally came from Greek mythology. In fact, such figures as Heracles, Perseus and Achilles were members of what were then called 'hero cults'. These cults were very significant in ancient Greek religion.

Today, the term 'hero' refers to people who instinctively put themselves in harm's way for the sake of the greater good. In the face of adversity, danger or weakness, they display courage and a will of self sacrifice.

To this day, the term 'hero' is an everyday word used to refer to those who hold themselves to a higher standard without conscience thought. Just as the ancient Greeks did, we in modern times value our hero's and recognize their outstanding selflessness and superior moral qualities.
